The real problem with the AMO Moisture Plus recall is getting an early and proper diagnosis. Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment of Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK). The infection is usually diagnosed by an eye specialist based on symptoms, growth of the ameba from a scraping of the eye, and / or seeing the ameba by a process called confocal microscopy.
There seems to be a high rate of false negatives so talk to your doctor: Acanthamoeba Keratitis is often misdiagnosed, and/or confused with other forms of keratitis caused by bacteria, fungus or viruses such as herpes. If you have developed a corneal infection that has not responded well to treatment, you may want to ask your doctor to consider the infection Acanthamoeba
Several prescription eye medications are available for treatment although this infection can be very aggressive. Call your doctor immediately. Compo bid on eye disease - Contact lens cleaner blamed
By Kay Dibben
A DRAMATIC increase in cases of a rare eye infection associated with people using a contact lens sterilising solution has been reported by a Brisbane hospital.
A man who says he used the solution and has lost sight in one eye has sued the American manufacturer, which also is facing similar lawsuits in the US.
Opthalmologists at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital saw nine cases of acanthamoeba keratitis, or AK, in the 12 months to February, compared with two a year for the previous four years.
In May, Advanced Medical Optics, the US manufacturer of the contact lens solution Complete Moisture Plus, recalled the product.
Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration followed suit.
The recall came after a warning from the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention that the risk of developing AK, caused by a parasite, was at least seven times greater for those using Complete Moisture Plus.
Brisbane eye surgeon and corneal specialist Dr Peter Beckingsale said the increase in the number of cases of the rare sight-threatening cornea infection at one Brisbane hospital was unusual.
All but one of the nine Brisbane patients who developed AK were contact lens users, but not all had used Complete Moisture Plus, according to the audit, to be reported in an opthalmology journal.
Tristan Mirapuri (pictured) has worn contact lenses for 17 years, but it was only a few months after using Complete Moisture Plus that he lost vision in his right eye.
Mr Mirapuri, a senior electronic systems designer, was diagnosed in January with AK, a rare sight-threatening cornea infection.
Mr Mirapuri, 32, from Coorparoo in Brisbane, has sued Advanced Medical Optics for damages for personal injuries, in a lawsuit filed in Orange County, California.
``I've lost all my vision in my right eye and I won't get it back until I have a cornea transplant a year from now,'' said Mr Mirapuri, who was worried damaged blood vessels in his eye could affect his chance of having a transplant.
``If I'm unable to get a transplant I'll have to live with one-eyed vision,'' the home electronic systems designer said.
This year Mr Mirapuri was admitted to hospital for two weeks so he could have special steroid eyedrops in his right eye every 20 minutes.
``It was quite tortuous,'' he said.
He still has to have eyedrops every hour and says he has suffered months of intense agony and is still on painkillers.
Mr Mirapuri has had to cut back his work hours, cannot drive and has had trouble watching television, looking at a computer screen or going outdoors in sunlight.
Damian Scattini from Mr Mirapuri's Queensland lawyers, Quinn and Scattini, said the company had put an inadequate product into the marketplace.
A spokesman for Advanced Medical Optics said the company did not comment on litigation.
